No one enjoys the smell of trash. Whether it’s rotten food, or dirty diapers, you’ll find yourself holding your breath when taking your trash out. But why does your trash can still smell bad even after garbage pickup? The CanMan has the answers for you!

Food Scraps

The minute you toss your leftovers in the trash, they start decomposing. This will cause that strong odor that emanates from the inside of your trash can and creeps throughout the house.

The primary culprit of your smelly trash is meat scraps. We recommend double bagging these when you toss them to prevent the smell from creeping out. It will also prevent any leaks that could end up in your trash can, thus leaving the nasty smell behind!

Dog Waste

You love your pups and want to keep your yard clean, but throwing their waste in the trash can causes some foul odors to stick around.

You can avoid the smell from your dog’s waste by double bagging. However, if you aren’t a fan of using multiple bags, there is another option for you. We recommend digging a hole in your yard to bury the waste, or if you have a large yard surrounded by trees, using a shovel to take it out of your yard and into the woods!

Bacteria and More

When food begins to decompose, microbes start to multiply and feed on that decomposition. These microorganisms consume your trash to get nutrients while also releasing chemicals. This process can make your trash can smelly very quickly. Some of those chemicals include phosphorus, nitrogen, and carbon. Our noses are particularly sensitive to odors like sulfur and can detect it even at low levels, which is why we notice those smells so quickly.

The decomposition process and all the bacteria that feed on rotting matter contribute to that horrible smell.

The best way to get rid of any unpleasant smells in your can is to get it professionally cleaned regularly. Cleaning your garbage bin helps reduce the number of bacteria on the surfaces of your bin and can help keep you and your family healthier.
